Ötzi the Iceman is the oldest human specimen ever discovered, older than the great pyramids, older than Stonehenge. He is also perhaps the most well preserved and studied human specimen. Forensic evidence suggests that he died of exposure after having been attacked and seriously wounded by an arrowhead. His remains were mummified by natural processes and remarkably well preserved. There were several weapons and tools found with him, and his skin bore multiple tattoos. The true meaning or purpose of his marked skin will forever remain hidden from any factual explanation or scientific proof. But within our illiterate intuitions we may recognize and understand more of his life than science would have us admit.
The tomb of Timur (AKA Tamerlane) was excavated on June 16, 1941. Days later, Nazi Germany began the deadliest invasion in recorded human history. The correlation of these events spawned a legend that proposed the tomb’s opening unleashed a curse that resulted in this Nazi invasion. The following quotes were (falsely) claimed to have been etched into the stones of Tamerlane’s tomb.
"Whosoever disturbs my tomb will unleash an invader more terrible than I."
"When I rise from the dead, the world shall tremble."
-Timur (Tammerlane)
The following quote is etched in more minds than those aware of having read it. Nearly all who encounter this quote inherently believe it holds truth when applied to others. But few truly fear the implications it imposes on one’s self.
"In every man sleeps a prophet, and when he wakes there is little more evil in the world."
– Emil Cioran
